4 Sheet Masking Mistakes You Might Be Making

I love using sheet masks. What better way to end the day than with a relaxing and soothing face mask? Most times I would slap one on and catch up on my latest tv show. Once in awhile though, after a long exhausting day, I would turn up my music with my face mask on, and just sit back and forget the world for a moment. Ah, such indulgence 🙂

My skin always feels so soft and smooth the next morning. However, when I first started sheet masking, I made a few mistakes that prevented me from getting the results I wanted even though it seemed pretty straightforward. Here’s hoping you don’t make the same mistakes too!

1. Not Prepping Your Skin Properly

You should always apply your sheet mask right after you have cleansed and toned/serum-ed your face. You wouldn’t want any dirt or grime mixing with all that essence goodness!

2. Leaving It On Too Long

I used to do this for the longest time because after the mask’s recommended time, I’d find that my mask was still drenched in essence so I’d leave it on till it felt drier.. This actually causes the dry mask to suck moisture back out of your skin. I fell asleep once with a sheet mask on (relaxed too much haha!), and woke up with 2 pimples on my cheek. I can’t say for sure that there’s a correlation, but I definitely won’t be trying that again.

3. Washing Your Face After

This!! Singapore’s climate is so hot and humid, my face always feels so sticky after applying a sheet mask that I would wash it right off. Don’t do this! You’re actually washing away all the benefits and goodness of the mask. Instead, keep patting your face or use a jade roller to remove any excess essence and help your skin absorb it better so it won’t feel so sticky. Don’t forget your neck as well!

4. Forgoing The Rest Of Your Skincare Regime

Again, me. Because my face felt sticky, I didn’t see the need to apply more stuff to my face. But it’s really important to at least apply moisturiser after using a sheet mask so as to lock in the essence from it.

After correcting my mistakes, I’ve gotten so much more out of my sheet masking sessions. I hope this helped! Enjoy pampering yourself 🙂

Listening and Learning

It has been hard reading the news each day, but that doesn’t mean we should close a blind eye to everything that’s happening around us. I may not understand enough to amplify their voices right now, but I’m listening and learning. I came across a blog post by @alittleshelfrighteous and she lists some good books to start with. Check it out if you’re looking for recommendations!

I listed out the books I wanted to read this year awhile back, and for now I’ll be adding Michelle Obama’s Becoming. I hope to be able to educate myself more on the #blacklivesmatter movement so if you have any other books to recommend, please let me know.

A Peek Into My Vanity – My Beauty Stash

Are you like me? Are you also curious about what other people have in their vanities? What brands they have, if they are also hoarders, or do they have a dope organiser?

I love looking through my friends’ skincare products (with their permission of course) and I’ll always ask for their opinions. This is how I’ve come to discover some of the brands that i currently use and love! I’m still constantly on the lookout for new products to add to my stash because you need to keep your products on rotation to prevent your skin from “getting used” to a certain item and hence limiting its effectiveness.

So anyway, here’s my contribution to the album of beauty stashes out there!

I’ve only recently purchased SKII’s Facial Treatment Essence and Skin Inc’s Optimizer Voyage Trilight, so I won’t be doing a review yet!

Drunk Elephant’s B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum so far hasn’t caused any adverse skin reaction so I’m pretty excited to see how it goes. I have heard so many positive reviews about this product and the packaging is so cute! I haven’t had the time to try Drunk Elephant’s C-Firma Day Serum but will definitely do it soon.

I also bought Tatcha’s Bestsellers Set at Sephora’s sale sometime back. My best friend has been loving their products so I decided to give them a try too! Their bottle are so pretty I can’t bear to use them yet hahaha.

Do you have any photos of your beauty stash on your blog? Please leave your link in my comments for me to check them out! 🙂

3 Easy Ways To Earn Free Money

*This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a small commission if you click on the links at no additional cost to you!

The best thing about these three ways is that you just have to sign up with your email to start earning!

1. Rakuten

I was recently introduced to this website Rakuten where I can receive cash back savings for buying products I need! I regret making all those purchases without doing more research, I could’ve saved hundreds of dollars..

They were formally known as Ebates and they partner with stores like Amazon, JCPenney, Sephora, Kiehl’s and hundreds more that you commonly shop at! So please remember to check this website if you’re about to make an online purchase to see if you can get any cash back.

It’s free to sign up AND they give you $10 just for joining and using their app. I’m still kicking myself for not finding out about this sooner, especially since I’ve been recommending skincare brands that can be found on this site.

2. Swagbucks

The Swagbucks program is literally giving money away for almost nothing. All you have to do is to either use their search engine and/or do surveys to earn points! Each time you use their search engine, you’re eligible to earn Swagbucks. You’re basically being paid to search, which is something we all do anyway! You can also earn points by watching videos, shopping with them, or doing the tasks set for you.

Once you have accumulated enough points, you can redeem it in the form of a gift card from their many stores/restaurants or you can choose to get it in cash via Paypal. Between this and doing a few surveys a day, I can earn around $20 – $ 25 a month. I used mine on an Amazon gift card last month, it was like buying myself a present 🙂

Swagbucks is such an easy way to earn a little extra money and takes almost no time at all to sign up, that I have been telling everyone around me about it!

3. Tailwind

Tailwind is a Pinterest scheduling tool that is used by most bloggers and businesses to drive traffic to their website. Not only does it help boost your marketing efforts on Pinterest, it also offers an affiliate program that pays a very generous commission.

You do need to sign up for a Tailwind account to become an affiliate, but it’s completely free for the first 100 pins you post. So whether you take 7 mins or 7 months to use your free trial, it’s up to you!

Once you’ve created an account, you can immediately get your referral link and start promoting that lets you either earn credits to pay for your subscription to Tailwind should you choose to continue, or redeem an Amazon gift card!

Adding Face Masks To Your DAILY Skincare Routine

I’m so happy to have had two people to approach me and ask for a bit of skincare advice! Hi Riylie and Beatrice! I hope it works out 🙂

I actually had to do a quick search of the products available in their area because I realised not everyone has access to the korean skincare products I love and use. Sephora does hold certain brands like Dr Jart+ and Sulwhasoo but the prices aren’t as competitive as here in Asia. In the states, at least Target does have My Beauty Diary and Neutrogena sheet masks at similar prices to Asia. Does anyone know how to get cheap korean skincare if you’re based in USA/Canada?

Anyway, I just wanted to add on to my current skincare routine. I do quite a few masks a week, but they cater to different needs. I think of them as targeted treatments.

So I’d usually use a deep cleansing mask 2-3 times a week (Sulwhasoo Clarifying mask/Mamonde Pore Clean Clay Mask)

Brightening/Moisturising sheet mask 1-2 times a week (I’m currently loving anything from Dr Jart+/My Beauty Diary)

Hydrating sleeping mask 2 times a week (Sulwhasoo Overnight Vitalising Mask/Dr Jart+ Vital Hydra Sleeping Mask)

When and what I use really depends on what I think my skin needs. If I’ve been out exercising or I’m feeling particularly clogged up (skinwise) that day, I would reach for a deep cleansing mask.

If I have a bit more time or I just want to relax, I’d use a sheet mask. Sometimes I’d pop them in the fridge for a bit, just to get that refreshing, cooling sensation when I put it on.

And finally, when my skin feels drier or when I’m lazy (usually this haha), I’d use a sleeping mask. Sleeping masks will give your skin a huge dose of moisture and are usually formulated ingredients that promote skin cell repair when you sleep.

I hope this posts helps inspire you to mask more frequently and take better care of your skin! These are some posts that might be of interest to you as well:

An Honest Review of Kiehl’s Skincare

I love Kiehl’s. To be honest, in the beginning I went without the intention of buying and only wanted their samples which they were really generous with. The salespeople were always welcoming and happy to share their knowledge without being pushy in getting you to buy their products. So I tested out their products for a year and am now posting my results for the first three months!

I used to have pretty good skin till I had a hormonal breakout around 18 years old and I never really recovered from it. I took these photos at the same spot at the same time every day to track my results. Even though I still have scars and blemishes, they’ve reduced significantly and my skin texture looks a little smoother!

Nightly Refining Micro-Peel Concentrate

I have sensitive skin that reacts badly to most products so when testing this, a peel, I was very careful. I tested it on my wrist first, then my neck for two days, then a tiny bit on my cheek for another two days, before I dared to apply it all over my face. The first day I applied it to my cheek it did sting and tingle a little which made me wait another day before deciding to try it all over.

It does its job well in refining the texture of my skin and I feel it helps my other products sink in a lot better.

Because it’s pricey, I tend to be a bit precious with it and only use it on my problem areas on alternate days. Two drops is enough to cover them all and so far I still have half a bottle even though I’ve been using it for a year!

Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution

I went through the same process when trying out this product. After that, I started using this as a serum and the effects were amazing! My face instantly looked brighter and clearer, and it hydrates really well too. I’m already on my third bottle because I use it day and night for my whole face haha.

Combined with the use of the Nightly Refining Micro-Peel Concentrate, this helped brighten my complexion and faded most of my blemishes. I highly recommend both products if you have the same problems as I do. Kiehl’s has samples for you to try if you aren’t sure about making a purchase since they are pretty pricey but one bottle can last you quite awhile depending on your usage!

Simple Skincare Regime For Glowing Skin

If you like what I’ve been posting so far, follow my blog with Bloglovin! 🙂

Being stuck at home for the past month or so, I’ve seen a huge improvement in my skin. Mainly because of the lack of make up and just generally more time to focus on my skincare regime. Anyway, recently on one of my zoom hangouts with my girlfriends, I was recommending Sulwhasoo Clarifying Mask that I have actually been neglecting for awhile. Since then, it’s become a regular in my routine again.

The Sulwhasoo Clarifying Mask is basically a gentle peel off mask that removes impurities and dead skin cells to detoxify and clarify skin. I use it in place of an exfoliator because my skin is too thin and sensitive to exfoliate in the traditional sense more than once a month. Here’s how my regime at night looks like:

  1. Double cleanse (because of sunblock).
  2. Pat on Hada Labo Premium Hydrating Lotion.
  3. Apply Sulwhasoo Clarifying Mask.
  4. After 20 mins, during which I moisturise the rest of my body and chill, peel off the mask.
  5. Wash off remaining mask on face, if any.
  6. Apply and massage on eye cream.
  7. Few drops of Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution/Kiehl’s Nightly Refining Micro-Peel Concentrate
  8. Apply Sulwhasoo Essential Balancing Emulsion
  9. Finish off with AHC Ageless Real Eye Cream for Face (7th gen)

I used my jade roller after each step and if I want a bit of extra hydration, I’ll add Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Oil. I find that if I work hard on my skincare regime, I will definitely see results. So it just boils down to finding the right products that work for you.

If you’re serious about improving your complexion, it’s best to read all the information out there that’s available to you. Some tips are to first find out your skin type and research brands and products that are suited for it. It can be overwhelming so start slow and change up your products one at a time. Best of luck!

Places to eat in Yangon

I can’t wait to be back in Myanmar, and this time it will be to stay! I shall write about my favourite places to eat and hope they haven’t been too badly affected by the quarantine imposed due to the pandemic.

  1. Rangoon Tea House
A little overpriced for food in Yangon but still cheaper than Singapore. I love their steamed pork belly buns (kong bak pau)!! Perfect ratio of meat to fats. It is heavenly. Actually I’ve tried most of their dishes and have no complaints. It’s the best place to start if you want to try local cuisine without the fear of food poisoning that comes with streetside food haha. The traditional tea that they serve according your sweetness level is pretty interesting and they do it well.
  2. White Swan Bakery
Lovely restaurant in a beautiful white mansion with affordable prices. I always eat upstairs (indoors because aircon) by the window that overlooks their estate and Inya Lake. We were actually considering hosting our wedding here, but as beautiful as their landscaping is, it wasn’t big or open enough for us. They do western food well enough here, and service is always impeccable.
  3. Locale
Yummy healthy food and freshly squeezed fruit juices without syrup (burmese like to add syrup even though they claim it’s just freshly squeezed juice). It’s located at Central and next door there’s this super good ice cream that tastes exactly like hokkaido ice cream that I can eat almost every night because it’s that good and I’m a glutton.
  4. 999 Shan Noodles House
This is located near Bogyoke Aung San Market, the most popular street market in Yangon. Shan noodles is one of my favourite burmese dish. You can have it both dry or with soup, and it’s so flavourful. Add chilli and you have the perfect dish.
  5. Nara Thai
Their food is decent though a little pricey. Their soft shell crab in yellow curry is to die for. And their desserts! I have tried them all and each time, my mind is blown. Can’t wait to visit this place again!

5 Tips On Making Your Long Distance Relationship Work

As my husband is currently in Myanmar and I’m in Singapore, we have been apart for close to 4 months now. Borders are still closed and likely won’t open till July. This is the longest we’ve ever been apart from each other, and it’s tough. I miss him so much. Facetime helps but it’s the uncertainty of when we’ll next see other that gets me down sometimes. We actually planned on going our honeymoon this year but I guess that’s down the drain. I’m just thankful that we procrastinated (as usual) in booking flights and accommodation. Hopefully we’ll get to go someday soon! For now, let me list some tips that has helped us in the past and are relying on more than ever right now to get us through this trying period.

1. Text each other good morning/good night messages

I don’t know if this works for everyone, but for me it helps to start or end a day knowing that your other half is thinking of you. Granted, there are days where we get so caught up with our own lives that we just fall into bed without texting but more often than not, we always make the effort to send a short text.

2. Keep Yourself Occupied

When you’re busy, you have less time to mope around pining for him and feeling sad. As I’m unable to travel for work now and I can’t work from home, I’ve been enrolling into online courses to keep myself busy. I also love that I’ve been reading a lot more.

3. Update Each Other

You don’t necessarily have to schedule in a video call to update every single minute or type out everything that has happened to you if that’s not you. You can send each other random texts or photos of what’s happening around you that either made you think of the other, or just wanting to share a moment with them.

4. Video Calls

Having said that, it makes a huge difference when you video chat compared to just texting. It helps to see the other person’s face, to see his smile, to hear his tone when he’s recounting his day. Just make sure you aren’t distracted and are really listening.

5. Have The Same Goal In Mind

For us, it’s to buy our first property. Whatever we do now, it’s to work towards that goal together. So even though we can’t plan when our honeymoon or my move will be due to the pandemic, we can still work hard to earn and save. With a common goal, we will constantly talk about our plans and keep each other motivated.

Most importantly, trust and have faith.

Places To Get A Decent Massage in Myanmar

All massage parlours are still not allowed to reopen for business in Singapore. So while I can only dream of getting good burmese massage now, I shall list out all my go to massage places in Yangon.

Hla Lifestyle Wellness Centre

Prices here are pretty steep compared to other places, but it is worth every penny. The staff here are well trained and treat you like royalty. I’ve been here more than 10 times since they’ve opened, and have gotten a good massage every single time. Please try this place out if you’re in Yangon and want a place to pamper yourself silly! (Price ~ SGD45/hr)

Muguet Japon Day Spa

This is a more affordable place for a good massage but if you prefer a lighter touch, you may experience hit or misses here. The masseurs here tend to use a harder than normal pressure so just be sure to let them know your preference! (Price ~ 25/hr)

Tony Tun Tun Beauty & Spa (Golden Hill)

Cheap yet doesn’t skimp on any frills nor the quality of massage. Because they have a hair salon next door, I usually get a massage followed by a hair wash #purebliss (Price ~ SGD12/hr)

*All prices are from memory and may have changed since.
